Vlad III known as Vlad the Impaler (Romanian: Vlad Țepeș [ˈvlad ˈt͡sepes]) or Vlad Dracula (/ˈdrækjələ/;[2][3] 1428/31 – 1476/77) was voivode (or prince) of Wallachia three times between 1448 and his death. He was the second son of Vlad Dracul who became the ruler of Wallachia in 1436. Vlad and his younger brother Radu were held as hostages in the Ottoman Empire from 1442 to secure their father’s loyalty.

Vlad’s father and eldest brother Mircea were murdered after John Hunyadi invaded Wallachia in 1447. Vlad narrowly escaped the same fate. After Hunyadi’s death in 1456 Vlad regained his throne.

He remained in Wallachia for two more years before being ousted by Vlad Călugăreanu another pretender to the throne. Vlad went to Moldavia where he was supported by Stephen III of Moldavia. He later attempted to retake Wallachia with Hungarian support but he was again defeated by Călugăreanu in 1465.

Vlad was captured in battle and he was imprisoned in Visegrád. He was probably killed before 1477.Accounts of Vlad’s cruelty have been exaggerated; he was not nearly as prolific of a killer as popular culture has made him out to be.

Vlad’s reputation for cruelty was highly exaggerated during his lifetime and after his death. Many of the stories about his cruelty were fabricated by his political enemies. The number of his victims is also uncertain; it was probably exaggerated for political reasons.

Vlad was about 6 feet (1.83 m) tall which was above average height for someone in the 15th century. He was described as being “well built” and “strongly made”.
