Cigarette companies have been known to use all sorts of disgusting ingredients in their products from rat droppings to human hair. But one of the most repulsive ingredients is actually quite common in the animal kingdom: dog and cat feces.
That’s right according to a study published in the journal Tobacco Control researchers found evidence of dog and cat feces in 10 out of 20 popular brands of cigarettes.
The brands included Marlboro Camel Newport Salem and Lucky Strike.
How does this happen? Well it turns out that many tobacco companies get their nicotine from a plant called Nicotiana tabacum which is native to South America.
The leaves of this plant are often infested with a particular type of beetle called the tobacco flea beetle.
These beetles lay their eggs on the tobacco leaves and the larvae then feed on the plants. As they do so they deposit their feces which contain high levels of nicotine onto the tobacco leaves.
The tobacco companies then use these leaves to create their cigarettes. And since the feces haven’t been removed they end up in the final product.
So the next time you light up a cigarette just remember that you could be smoking dog or cat poop.
Gross!
